Beazell Forest Wedding

Photographed a great wedding over Memorial Day Weekend at the Beazell Memorial Forest just outside of Corvallis. It was raining hard during the ceremony but it was a small wedding and no one was bothered by the weather, or the half mile hike up a muddy trail to the Gazebo where Steve and Sabrina had a wonderful simple ceremony.

We are busy gearing up for our Class of 2012 senior's that will be starting soon. But just like his sister last year Seth is our last member of the class of 2011 to be photographed. That is ok though we had a great time and got a great group of photos.

Five Generations

Spring is here and I start getting busy this time of year again. On Saturday I photographed a family with five generations. At the end of the session we spend some time shooting the two youngest. Alyssa and her daughter Madison. Now if the spring weather would get here I would be much happier.

I photographed these two Oregon State University students earlier this week for a story they are doing about Veterans on Campus. They are both veterans who are going to OSU and they work with a group that helps other veterans at OSU.

About a year and a half ago, I was approached by food writer and artist Jan Roberts Dominguez about a project she wanted to do. A cookbook about Hazelnuts and she wanted to know if I would be interested in doing some photos for it.

I had worked with Jan many times before when I worked at the Gazette-Times and I would shoot photos for her food stories.

I was excited and scared to do it, but working with Jan I knew she would make it easier. We shot photos over 5 days this summer and I am very excited about it.

The shoots were a blast. I had Ryan Gardner from Visual People assist me, Jan is a great food stylist and Artist. She made my job simple. We would shoot the food and then eat the leftovers it was great.

Joanne McLennan took all the words, photographs and artwork and turned them in to a beautiful book. It is amazing what great graphic designers can do.

My mom was even part of the book. She has known Jan for years working with her when mom was at the Oregonian. My mom proofread and checked all the recipes.

The book is scheduled to be out before Thanksgiving so if you need a Christmas gift pick it up. If you want I can probably get Jan to sign it for you.

If you told me you wanted to get married outside in Oregon I would tell you to plan it for September.

It never rains in September and if it does it is just a passing shower.

Scratch that idea.

Justine and Dakotah's wedding two weeks ago was the rainiest wedding I have ever photographed, but they were great. The rain did not bother them or the guest and I ended up with some great photographs.

Two more High School seniors.

Drew we photographed on the Alsea River outside of Waldport, and at the South Albany gym. I had a special assistant at the shoot in the gym. I made my dad carry all my gear and hold the lights.

I think we photographed Andrew in 4 different hats and he has got a great mom who let the hats be in the photos not all mom's do.

Commitment Ceremony-Corvallis Photography

I photographed my first commitment ceremony a few weeks ago at the Grand Ballroom in Salem. It was a wonderful ceremony filled with love happiness and joy. Just like all the weddings I shoot.

I don’t understand how in the year 2010 some in our society does not recognize, or understand, that the love between and man and a woman is the same as the love between and woman and women or man and a man. We are all people and everyone deserves the same rights. Deb and Jihesheia I wish you a long and happy marriage.

I often tell couples when they book me that I just try to fit in at the wedding like a guest. I don't want to be part of the day just observe and take great photos.

This wedding was easy to do that. I photographed her family a few years ago. I shot her sister Keri and AJ's wedding last year.

I am almost done with a shoot that has been in the works for over a year. I am shooting photos for a cookbook on Hazelnuts that local author, artist, foodie extraordinaire Jan Roberts-Dominguez is putting together. Food is very different then 95% of what I shoot very challenging but also very fun. The best part is eating the left overs when we are done with the shoots. I don't want to show any of the photos until the book comes out, but here you can see Jan arranging the food and Ryan Garder who is assisting me on the shoot. This year had been a year of all new wedding venues for me to shoot at. I like that because it is always fun to photograph new people and places. Dan and Neal's wedding at Airlie Winery outside of Corvallis is a great place for a nice intimate wedding lots of great place to shoot. Dan and Neal were wonderful to work with and I got lots of great photos form the day.

The only thing I would of changed is my directions. I tried to go home a quicker way and got lost. Took me an hour longer to get home. I am an idiot sometimes.

Cannon Beach Wedding

I got a call a while back from a bride that was a little different then most.

They loved my photography and wanted me to shoot their wedding.

They first wanted to know what dates I was open so they could plan around that. Then they told me they wanted me to pick where they should get married, and what time of day to get the best photos. I could not believe what I was hearing.

Art and Joanna are from Texas and wanted to get married in Oregon. They wanted great photos so they figured the best person to ask was their photographer.

I gave them a few of my favorite spots and they were married last Friday on the beach in front of Haystack rock.

I photographed the Oregon State Alumni Association Orange and Black dinner last Saturday in Portland. This was the event that Al Reser was honored as the E.B. Lemon Distinguished Alumni Award.

Al died earlier this week.

I did not know him well but had met and photographed him many times over the last 10 years.

The first was after he donated the 10 million to OSU for the naming rights to Reser Stadium. The last was earlier this year at the groundbreaking for the Linus Pauling Institute, which he and his family donated 10.65 million to.

He has done great things for Oregon State University, the school I love, and I wish I would of thanked him earlier.

Six years ago today was my last at the Gazette-Times. It ended my 12 year career as a newspaper photographer, and was the start of my own business.

I wish I was smart and say I could foresee the downfall of the newspaper industry, but no, I quit to be a stay at home dad and see if I could make it as a freelance photographer.

I have never looked back.

Sure I miss having co-workers, I wish I would have been Omaha in 2006 when the Beavers won the College World Series. The Civil War last year would of been great to shoot, but I love what I do now. Running my on business is very rewarding

With my commercial photography I work with some great clients and some very talented and creative people. They have helped me become a much better photographer.

I have photographed so many great weddings and met many wonderful brides and grooms who I still keep in touch with.

I would have have never thought photographing 17 year old kids for their senior photos would be so fun and rewarding. They are great to work with and I can be as creative as I want.

So to everyone that has helped me along this journey, especially my three girls.

Thank you very much I look forward to the next six years. And then who knows?

This morning bright and early I had to shoot Surgery at Good Sam hospital in Corvallis. I have shot them before and they are always fun and a little stressful. Fun because I get to dress up in scrubs and pretend I am a surgeon for a while. Stressful because I am afraid of touching the wrong thing or standing in the wrong spot. todays was great the nurses and doctors were easy to work with and I got some cool photos of the new da Vinci surgery robot in action. This is a photo of me and Betsy Meidinger who works in Marketing for Sam Health. I will post some of the photos once they use them.

Time to retire an old friend

I had not thought about it until I got together with long time friend and photographer Robin Loznak a few weeks ago and he said "you still have that same camera bag"

Yes I do.

My mom bought it for over 20 years ago when I was in college. Domke bags were, and still are the coolest bags to have. Nothing said I am a kick ass professional like a well used Domke bag.

It is the only bag I have ever used as a professional. I remember looking setting it down on a fire ant hill in Texas and it was covered with in seconds with ants that bite. It smelled like smoke for weeks after the Oakland Hills fire in 1993. I spilled a big bag of jelly bellies in it once and kept finding them for years it seemed. It has been to every wedding I have photographed, and every one of the 828 jobs I have photographed since quitting the newspaper 6 years ago.

But it is time to get a new one. it is faded, ripping at the seems. The strap has almost worn through. There are holes on the bottom and sides, and the dividers inside barely work.

But I won't get rid of it I am going to put it on a shelf in my office next to my old Nikon F3

My new camera bag will be the same a black Domke, that will last me until I retire in 20 years

A senior in the middle of Winter

Well I thought I was done with the class of 2010, but got a call from a mom in late December I had photographed her niece and her daughter need senior photos. Well after a few rainouts we finally had nice enough weather last Saturday. Megan was easy going and fun to shoot, we even did a few photo of her with her camera (she is a photographer herself) Here are two of my favorites.

I had photographed Dave a few times before for his company InSightsNow, but when Dave called me in December he was looking for photos for a CD he was putting out. He wanted the photos outside to go along with the feeling of the album. We were scheduled to do it on a Monday afternoon, but Dave called early on the Thursday before because it was forecast to rain on the Monday and he wanted to know if I was free right then. Well shooting photos is a lot more fun then the work I had to do so we went out for an early morning shoot.

The thing is it was that week with the really cold weather in Oregon. It was 9 degree's out when we started. The batteries in my flashes would barley recharge. Dave had to hold his breath during the photos so the vapor would not show up. We did two different locations in about an hour and a half before we were both too cold to go on.

Am I Blue

Back to work, and blog postings. after two weeks off.

First off a better blue.

A professor at Oregon State accidentally discovered a new better blue dye. You can read about it here. I photographed him and his student late last month, and we wanted a blue feeling to the photos. Mas was great to shoot he gave me lots of time, let me stop by a few days before the shoot to scout out the location. I don't understand how or what they were doing when they made it but it is a cool looking blue.

Last summer I had a great time at Keri and AJ's wedding, and next summer I am shooting Keri's sister Amanda's wedding. I did an engagement session with Amanda and Justin late last month when we still had a few leaves on the trees. Just finishing up the wedding of Charles and Monica. They were married at Mountain Springs Resort near Leavenworth Washington. It rained most of the day but we did get outside for a few photos. I really like the feel the low clouds give the photo. You can see a slideshow by clicking here.

It's cool now if you are a photographer to post photos on your blog and then tell everyone how your lights were set up and how hard it was to get everything just right even put a lighting diagram if you want real wow. You have to use the lingo also, camera right, gobo, rim light, fill etc.

I photographed Abby for the one of my good clients today, I had all the lights loaded in the car, but it was so nice out this morning, I did not need them just a little fill (see cool word huh!) from a reflector, and when she opened her book great fill on her face. See I am cool.

When I am working my girls often come in to the office to see what I am doing. Today when I was doing these photos, my youngest asked if her name was Sara? I looked at her and said "yes how do you know her" She replied "she has red hair of course her name is Sara" It's true every red head we know and are close to is named Sara. Often times when I am shooting Senior Photos people get in the background. We just wait until the get out of the photo and I usually say something about "How we wanted them in the photo" or If makes a better photo with them in it" Yesterday while shooting a couple and there dog walked up behind and I just thought it looked cool so I snapped off a few frames. I like this photo. Melanie if you see this don't worry I will put some regular ones of you up soon but I just wanted to share this.

When I worked at newspapers, photographers always railed about running photos bigger. No matter what the photo was or looked like we wanted them to run big. Page designers always pretended to listen to us but never did. Finally someone listened. Samaritan Health (one of my best and favorite clients) just put up some new billboards around the area with my photos. this one is on Hwy 34 between Corvallis and Tangent we saw two others this weekend on our trip to the Coast, but the family would not let me stop and get photos.

I did it I made a Facebook Fan page for my business I did not want to but want to try it to see if it works. right now it just has high school seniors on it, I will be adding weddings soon. I have not posted in a while and I feel really bad, I know one of my former co-workers who is still being held hostage by the evil Lee Enterprise empire enjoys my blog and when I don't post for a while I feel guilty. This is the second time we have photographed the Dunn Family the first time was three years ago. I always think it is going to be hard to shoot dogs, but Chester was great.

I got this email last week from a recent couple. They said I could share it

Thank you so much for meeting with us the other day -- we've looked through the photos and LOVE them! We just wanted to let you know what an amazing job you did.

We especially realized this yesterday when Matt and I went to a friend's wedding; she had hired a photographer who brought along 2 other photographers/assistants. So, throughout the ceremony, 3 loud cameras were flashing and going off left and right -- they were on the stage, walking through the audience, and were overall incredibly intrusive. We were unable to see the bride and groom, at times, because the photographers were blocking them trying to get the perfect shot! This really showed Matt and I how lucky we were to have you.
